Then and Now Obstacle Course

OBJECTIVE: Encourage youth to pray so they will not enter into temptation.
Review the enrichment activity (see PRIMARY LESSON 37: “Jesus Christ Teaches the Nephites to Pray” below*) in the manual for which the following activity illustrates.
ACTIVITY: This game teaches youth about prayer THEN (in Nephite Zion) and NOW (today’s Zion). This game will take you to these two time periods. SEE HOW TO PLAY in the pdf file (or BELOW*.
For example, a “THEN” STUMBLING BLOCK card reads, “You wanted to go with your friends, but your brother has asked you to help him build a boat to sail to the Promised Land. WHAT WOULD YOU PRAY ABOUT?”
For example, a “THEN & NOT” card reads, “You haven’t been living the teachings of Jesus, and you want your friends to disobey the commandments with you. You have a strong feeling that if you don’t repent now, you will never find the truth. WHAT WOULD YOU PRAY ABOUT?”

*HOW TO PLAY: Put Stumbling block cards and Blessing Bonus cards facedown in separate piles. Divide players into two teams or play individually. Place marker on board at START. Take turns rolling die and move marker on board toward HEAVEN. Draw a Stumbling Block card when you land on SB. Answer what you would pray about to make a decision living THEN in Nephite Zion or NOW in Today’s Zion. Draw a Blessing Bonus card when you land on BB (move or do as it says).
TO MAKE Print, color, and cut out the game board parts A and B, cards, and markers. Glue parts A and B together. Obtain a pair of dice to roll.
THOUGHT TREAT: Then and Now Popsicles. Purchase two different flavors of popsicles, break in half, and give each youth two colors for then and now. Enjoy the two flavors as you think of Book of Mormon (then) and the latter-days (now).
TESTIMONY: Bear testimony of the importance of daily prayer and that if we pray as Jesus taught, we will be protected from the influences of Satan.
SCRIPTURE CHALLENGE CARD: Help children Search and Ponder this scripture card by filling in the blanks. PRINT this 5 x 7 scripture card from the pdf included with the above activity. You can punch the two holes on the left and tie a ribbon to attach cards or use two metal rings to connect cards.
Alma 13:28-29 “But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;
Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest.”
